Jesse White, Secretary of State and State Librarian, is widely regarded for his commitment to improving the lives of Illinois children.
In order to continue these efforts, Secretary White implemented a mentoring program in various Illinois Public Libraries known as Project Next Generation. The program, which started in 2000, is designed to
encourage middle school students to participate in using the newest computer technology such as digital cameras, scanners, wireless keyboards, streaming video and various software packages.
The primary goal of this program is to provide opportunities for skill and personal development as well as motivating students to reach new levels of achievement and self-esteem.
As it continues to expand into new areas of the state, the program has been incredibly successful in a number of Illinois libraries during its first two years. It is now in its third year. This year promises to
be a year of creativity and idea sharing with use of new software and programs.
